On the rooftop of The Drakos was a huge infinity pool that ended at the edge of the roof, large tennis courts, a putt-putt golf range, and a large basketball court. All surrounded by a twelve-feet tall enclosure made of unbreakable glass.

When Cate made it on the rooftop, she saw a few workers near the entranceway stacking chairs around the pool area. She asked them if they had seen Jordan Grant, and they showed her where he was. Beyond the pool, and beyond the tennis courts, was the basketball court on the far end of the deck. She thanked them, smiled, and headed in that direction.

Jordan didn’t hear her arrive. He had his shirt off and was shooting hoop after hoop. To Cate’s surprise, as she walked toward him, he was actually good at it. He didn’t miss a shot. But what black boy, she thought, couldn’t play basketball? Passing a math quiz, she said in her racist mind, forget about it. But basketball? Check!

“Hey, Jordan,” she said cheerfully when she saw him. She had to say it again before she finally got his attention.

When Jordan first saw her, he was apprehensive. He remembered what Alex had ordered him to do, although he still wasn’t quite sure why. But he knew workers had been on the deck, and when he looked all the way across the space and saw that a few were still up there stacking chairs, he didn’t trip. He smiled and rolled the ball on his fingertips. “What’s up?”

“Still checking things out,” Cate said. “What’s up with you?”

Wasn’t it obvious, Jordan thought? But he wasn’t a disrespectful kid. “Hoops,” he said.

“Let me guess,” Cate said. “When you grow up, you want to be a basketball star!”

Jordan kept smiling, but he found her insinuation insulting. “When I grow up, as you put it,” he said, “I want to be a doctor. Or a businessman like Mr. Drakos. But a basketball player? I stand a far better chance of being a doctor, or a businessman working for Mr. Drakos, than a hoops star.”

Cate’s blood boiled. The idea that this four-eyed idiot would someday take over Drakos Capital was ludicrous! And she was convinced that was what he meant by “working” for her father. She wanted to set his ass straight, right then and there, but she knew she couldn’t show her hand that easily. She had to stick to the plan! “A doctor sounds great,” she said. “But keep shooting your hoops,” she added. “I’m just looking around.”

Jordan felt as if he was being handled by her, for some reason, but anything to stay out of her way. He continued to shoot hoops and Cate did just that: she began looking around. But not for nothing. She was looking for one particular thing. She knew her father would pattern his hotel after those luxurious ones in places like Hong Kong or Qatar. When she found what she was looking for, she smiled. And went back over to Jordan.

“Where’s Mom and Dad?” she asked him.
